Nigerian ambassador to US, Adefuye, dies at 68

Professor Adebowale Adefuye, a PhD holder in History from the University of Ibadan, died on Thursday in a Washington hospital.
The 68-year-old Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State born diplomat, whose tenure will end on Monday, was reported to have died after he suffered from heart attack.
While details of his death were not provided by the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, but it announced the passage on its official website.
Entitled “Demise of Professor Adebowale Adefuye” the embassy said: “The Embassy wishes to announce the death of Professor Adebowale Adefuye, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United States, which sad event occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2015, after a brief illness.”
“Funeral arrangements will be announced later,” the embassy said, at the time GatewayMail learnt workers were already planning a send-forth get-together to honour Adefuye.
The deceased, who became ambassador to US in March 2010, bagged his First Degree in History at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1969, and in 1973 earned a Ph.D. in History in the same university.
Adefuye, who as a Fulbright scholar studied at Columbia University, the University of North Florida and the University of Florida in Gainesville, began his academic career as a Lecturer at the University of Lagos.
The deceased, who became a Professor in the University of Lagos was one time ambassador to Jamaica, with concurrent accreditation to Haiti and Belize, between 1987 to 1991.
He was also in UK from 1991 to 1994 where he served as Deputy High Commissioner, and later worked with the Commonwealth before he moved to the Economic Community of West African States as an Advisor for two years, between 2008 and 2010 and ended as Ambassador to the United States in 2010.
