NIGERIA: A MIDDLE-AGED man on Wednesday committed suicide at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The hospital premises was thrown into confusion after the man jumped from the fifth floor and landed on the ground.
The hospital’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Ayodeji Bobade, who confirmed the sad development to GatewayMail, said that the deceased hit his head on the concrete floor and died on the spot.
Bobade explained that the victim was alleged to have sneaked to the floor unknown to the workers.
According to him, the man carried out his mission due to the ongoing nationwide strike embarked on by the hospital staff.
Bobade stressed that the suicide occurred around 9am on the floor where the hospital museum was located.
“The incident happened at about 9am. He jumped from the fifth floor, leaving only his leather slippers,” he said, adding: “The floor is where the museum is; he sneaked to the floor, because of the ongoing JOHESU strike.”
The image maker, however, said that the deceased’s family could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.
But, when our correspondent visited the hospital, bloodstains were seen at the spot as hospital orderlies were seen cleaning the concrete floor and the deceased’s remains were being moved to the hospital morgue.
Bobade while speaking further said the management of the hospital had reported the incident to the police.
The spokesperson, who confirmed that the corpse had been moved to the morgue, lamented that it was unfortunate that the hospital was turned to a place to commit suicide.
According to him, the police would work out other modalities to locate and identify the deceased’s family as he had no identity on him.
“It is a case of suicide, and we have invited the police. I am not aware if he left any note, but the corpse is in our mortuary,” Bobade said.
