Police nab five over attack on Magu’s home, death of sergeant

NIGERIA: MEN of the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended five suspected persons regarding the attack on the residence of the Acting Chairman of the Economic Financial and Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

During the invasion, GatewayMail recalled, the suspected men killed a police sergeant on duty, Sergeant Haruna Sarki, and carted away two AK47 rifles at the Abuja residence of the EFCC boss.

The Force Deputy Public Relations Officer, Aremu Adeniran, made this disclosure on Monday in a news release made available to GatewayMail.

Adeniran, a Superintendent of Police, said that the men nabbed are Inalegwu Omikpa (36), who is the gang leader, Francis Ochife (38) and Vincent Michael, a dismissed soldier of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) with number NAF 12/26972 L/CPL.

According to him, the other two gang members are Air Force personnel who are already undergoing disciplinary action in the NAF.

The police deputy image maker explained that exhibits recovered from the men included two AK47 rifles, two mobile phones, two magazines and 60 rounds of AK47 ammunitions.

He explained: “The above mentioned principal suspects were arrested by the Police team in their various criminal hideouts after an unrelenting trail on the perpetrators of the unfortunate incident by the personnel of the IGP Intelligence Response Team and the two (2) Police AK47 rifles carted away from the slain Police sergeant and one other Police personnel on duty were recovered from the possession of a member of the gang in his village home in Otukpo, Benue State.”

According to him, after their arrest the men confessed to have committed the act.

Adeniran said: “They have confessed to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of the crime.  Investigation is ongoing to arrest other members of the gang still at large.”

“All suspects would be arraigned in court on completion of investigation,” he stated, adding: “The renewed commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee protection of lives and property across the country remains unequivocal and unwavering.”
