NIGERIA: A KATSINA State High Court has sentenced a former Permanent Secretary in the administration of ex-Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, to seven years imprisonment without option of fine.
The presiding judge, Justice Sanusi Tukur, last Friday declared that Yusuf Sule Saulawa would go to jail on one count of “obtaining by false pretense.”
Before the judgement, the court heard that the convict fraudulently obtained N2.5 million from the complainant while he was a permanent secretary attached to the Office of the Deputy Governor of Katsina State on the pretext that the office would award the complainant a contract for the supply of fertilizer to all the local government areas in Katsina State.
The court was further told that Saulawa claimed that the money was for the purchase of bidding documents and that it was further alleged that after obtaining the money, the convict cut all contacts with the complainant.
During the prosecution, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, invited three witnesses and tendered several exhibits.
After both parties had closed their case last October 3, final written addresses were adopted and the case was subsequently adjourned to December 29 for judgement.
However, while delivering the judgement, Justice Tukur said that he was convinced that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
